Let me borrow the Genesis narrative to explain. First the earth was formless and empty, and dark. Then came light. God separated the light and the darkness, then the land and the sea. Next he made the plants and the trees, and after that every living creature. Finally he made man, and woman, in his own image. On the sixth day he looked upon all that he had made ‘and saw that it was very good’. He saw the rugged contours of the earth, the rivers, mountains and valleys, the forests and the meadows, the living creatures, humankind, and he pronounced them not just good but ‘very good’. Adam and Eve were naked and ‘unashamed’.
Buried somewhere deep in our hearts we have the desire to return to the idyll of the sixth day. An earth without corruption, where we could simply be, without all the artefacts of our busy modern lives. Our bodies belong to the earth, and the earth calls us to return.
The earth is a lving body and our bodies are living landscapes. We can take innocent pleasure in the landscape of a beautiful body, just as we do in the landscape of the earth. They belong together, and one informs the other. In my photography I try to capture all these living and elemental forces together – light and dark, earth wind and sky. Flesh, and bone and hair.
