Icons of Caucasus Mountains
Deep in the Caucasus Mountains, the Christian faith is deeply revered. Having resisted numerous invasions from Islam in the past, Georgian Christians have preserved many marvelous icons dating from the 6th to 14th centuries in the attics of their chapels. These treasures, often decorated with gold or silver, would easily find their place in the world’s greatest museums. The villagers have recently been considering selling the icons so that they may leave their fortified farms and live in the “comfort” of the nearest cities.
