The Ubuntu 11.04 “Natty Narwhal” released. You can download a CD version from ubuntu.com. The biggest change from ubuntu’s previous releases is Unity, a modern desktop developed by ubuntu team exclusively for ubuntu. Also Ubunty 11.04 is not including the Gnome 3.0. Unity is supported byCompiz Fusion, the 3D desktop of linux. Gnome 3.0 is not using compiz fusion. A classic Gnome 2.0 desktop is also included in Ubuntu 11.04.

Download Ubuntu 11.04
You can download latest ubuntu 11.04 from ubuntu website and ubuntu mirrors deployed all over the world. You can select a CD image and write it to a cd or create a bootable usb drive and make an easy installation. The CD is a live CD. So you can test Ubuntu without install into your computer. Also there is a great tool called wubi, the windows installer for ubuntu. By using wubi you can install ubuntu inside windows as a programme and uninstall as a programme.
The default Ubuntu 11.04 is packed with Firefox 4, Libreoffice 3.3.2, Banshee Music Player, Shotwell Photo editor etc. But more programmes are avilable for download and install from ubuntu software center.
Start Ubuntu 11.04 with Classic Gnome 2 Desktop
There is an option in the login screen. After selecting your username a menu will appear in the bottom of the login screen. You can select the session and language from bottom bar. There you can select the classic desktop and then type password. You will be greeted with the classic gnome desktop. If your graphics hardware is not comaptable with ubuntu then the default boot will go to gnome 2.0. You will get unity desktop after install the 3D support only.
There are lot of things to do after install ubuntu 11.04 for a perfect desktop user. First of all you need restricted multimedia repositories. Then custom applications for various purpose etc…
Install Updates in Ubuntu 11.04
The very first thing after install ubuntu 11.04 is to update all the repositories. To do this Just open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and type
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
This will do the magic. You have the latest operating system with all updates.
Ubuntu restricted extras in Ubuntu 11.04
Ubuntu Restricted Extras will install Adobe Flash Player, Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (sun-java-jre) with Firefox plug-ins (icedtea), a set of Microsoft Fonts (msttcorefonts), multimedia codecs (w32codecs or w64codecs), mp3-compatible encoding (lame), FFMpeg, extra Gstreamer codecs, the package for DVD decoding (libdvdread4, but see below for info on libdvdcss2), the unrar archiver, odbc, and cabextract. It also installs multiple “stripped” codecs and avutils (libavcodec-unstripped-52 and libavutil-unstripped-49). This is a single command approach.
This will take a while to install whole package. Keep your terminal open until the whole package list will be installed. Otherwise you want to start everything from the scratch. You can install the restricted extras from the ubuntu software center also. You will get a graphical progress of the installation. But command line is always faster.
To install the packages below you just search in ubuntu software center and press install. But the command terminal command will do the work more faster.
By using Compiz setting manager you’ll be able to tweak the Unity launcher reveal mode, hide behavior, change Unity-specific keyboard shortcuts, change the Unity launcher icon size, the top panel opacity, tweak various animations and more.
You can tweak the unity by selecting Ubuntu Unity Plugin from ‘Desktop’ category. Now choose the Experimental tab from above. There you will see the ‘Panel Opacity’ option. Change it to the value you like. Also you can adjust the value of ‘Launcher Icon Size’ by simple scrolling. The default value of ‘Launcher Icon Size’ is 48 but you can adjust to your conveniance.
Increase or decrease the no of desktops in Ubuntu 11.04
By default there are 4 desktop available. Just press Super+s will give the overview. To change the no of desktop go to Compiz config settings manager > select General Options from the category ‘General’. Select the tab ‘Desktop Size’ and choose the values you want.
