Peninsula Valdes in Argentine Patagonia – Killer whales Season – Fall 2017
Killer whales is a beautiful spectacle in the province of Chubut and is already in full swing the first season of the year. In patagonia are 2 seasons of killer whales throughout the year; One between March and April in Punta Norte and the other between October and November in Caleta Valdés.
Only about 30 killer whales come to Punta Norte between early March and April. The sea lions, born at the beginning of summer, begin to separate from the mothers and experience the coast by themselves.
In those two months, the colony loses 10% of the offspring in the jaws of the orcas. Meanwhile, surviving offspring understand survival codes more. They understand the danger of contact with the sea and killer whales are no longer easy to catch. The high peak of orcas is only 10 or 15 days.
In the autumn months, family groups of local killer whales add to the daily intake of 80 kg of salmon, octopus and other sea creatures, delicious sea lions. The lobitos for the orcas represent 20 kg of delicious and tender meat.
