The renaissance of Hallesches Tor – Berlin – Graffitis

The following pictures come from Hallesches Tor, a neighborhood in East Berlin. I’m sure we’ve all heard about the broken window theory, which states that graffiti and other types of building defamation encourage further vandalism and promote an environment leading to offenses that are more serious. However, in this neighborhood the opposite occurred. Many well-known graffiti artists collaborated together on this apartment complex, to create a stunning mural. It’s really phenomenal, it features the anonymous faces of races from around the globe, in stunning detail, with a few well known figures: Ghandi, Sailor Moon, Jimi Hendrix, and all are on a psychadelic backrgound. This area was dilapidating and succumbing to crime until the graffiti project renewed neighborhood pride. It brought up the value of the area, and actually improved it, now it’s a safe neighborhood, brimming with pride. This proves that when embraced as an artform, graffiti may have many benefits.
