Android 4.0 ICS Update For Acer Iconia A500
Acer have officially confirmed the availability of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich firmware update package for the Iconia Tab A500 and Iconia Tab A100 tablets. The firmware update will begin to roll out on April 27th.
The two slates were launched in April 2011, being among the first tablet models to feature Android 3.0 Honeycomb out of the box. In terms of technical specifications, both Acer Iconia A500 and Iconia A100 are based on the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset and come with 1 GB of RAM.
The main differences between the two tablets are the materials (aluminium was used for the case of the Iconia Tab A500 and plastic for Iconia Tab A100) and the size and resolution of the displays. The 10.1-inch tablet, Acer Iconia Tab A500, has a display resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels, while the Iconia Tab A100 model features a 7-inch display limited to 1,024 x 600 pixels.
The upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich version of the Android operating system is a welcomed refresh for both tablets, bringing improved performance, a more intuitive user interface and new Android 4.0 specific features, like Face Unlock, built-in data traffic manager and an advanced task manager. Acer brought their own improvements to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich: the Acer Ring menu and support for application shortcuts on the Lock Screen.
