If you love virtual computing, I highly recommend VMware Player. Normally, I eschew proprietary software. Virtual machines is a problem domain technical enough that the open source community has trouble keeping up.

Specifically with Windows releases. VirtualBox has many bugs on Windows Vista/7. The most alarming of these is the broken installer/uninstaller.

Virtualbox’s installer fails to finish installing, leaving you agonizing whether to cancel the install and risk corrupting your computer, or wait for the Second Coming.

Even worse, Virtualbox fails to finish uninstalling. Upon cancellation, many networked programs, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Steam lose the ability to connect to the Internet. If you deleted the Virtualbox installer and have no other browser available, then you must download the installer on another computer and copy it over with a flash drive.

  1. Obtain the Virtualbox installer.
  2. Attempt installation.
  3. Run -> regedit
  4. Delete the following keys:
    • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}
    • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F414C260-6AC0-11CF-B6D1-00AA00BBBB58}
  5. Run -> appwiz.zpl -> Right-click Oracle Virtualbox -> Uninstall
